How much should stay on the exchange? A custody split plan for Pakistani crypto holders

Leaving everything on an exchange is convenient but concentrates risk. A simple way for Pakistani users to decide what stays in the exchange account, what moves to a personal wallet and which controls protect each part.

Most people end up keeping their entire balance on an exchange by default rather than by decision. Funds arrive there through peer-to-peer purchases, a few trades happen, and moving anything elsewhere feels like extra work. The problem is that every rupee of value then depends on one account, one password and one company's operations. A custody split does not need to be complicated. It starts with asking what you actually use the exchange for, sizing the balance to that purpose and moving the rest to storage you control, with sensible protections on both sides.

Separate trading money from savings

Look at your last few months. How much did you actually trade or need quick access to? That figure, plus a margin for opportunities, is your working balance. Anything above it is savings that does not need to sit on an exchange. Holders who buy monthly and rarely sell may find their working balance is close to zero apart from the latest purchase. Active traders will need more. The point is to make the amount a deliberate choice that you review each quarter.

Prepare the personal wallet properly

Before moving savings out, set up a personal wallet and write the recovery phrase on paper, stored somewhere private and safe from water and fire. Never photograph it or keep it in cloud notes. Send a small test amount first and confirm it arrives on the correct network. If the amount is large, consider a hardware wallet. Remember that self-custody moves the responsibility to you: nobody can restore a lost recovery phrase.

Lock down what remains on the exchange

On Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget, the working balance deserves the same care. Use a strong unique password, an authenticator app or passkey instead of SMS where possible, an anti-phishing code for emails and a withdrawal address allowlist that includes your personal wallet. Review active devices and API keys and remove anything you do not recognise. These controls make the exchange part of your split much harder to drain if your password is ever exposed.

Review the split on a schedule

Set a quarterly reminder to compare the exchange balance with your working balance target and move any excess. Check that the recovery phrase is still where you left it and that your allowlist only contains addresses you still use. Write the date and the amounts moved in a small log. Over time the split becomes a habit rather than a project.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Calculate a working balance from your actual trading needs over the last few months.
  • Write the personal wallet recovery phrase on paper and send a small test transfer first.
  • Enable an allowlist, anti-phishing code and app-based verification on the exchange account.
  • Compare the exchange balance with your working balance target every quarter and log changes.
